I was born in Amsterdam but raised in Ibiza. I studied music theory and guitar from a young age but suffered from terrible stage fright at my first-ever performance and decided to quit shortly after. I was that kid at school that always had his earphones on listening to music rather than talking to other students. In my early teens, I became obsessed with DJing, and by the time I was 13, I had saved up enough money doing odd jobs for our neighbors to be able to buy my first pair of belt drive “Acoustic Control” turntables. DJing became an obsession and it was my re-entry into music, and for some strange reason, I no longer had stage fright.
One of the best things you can do as a working producer is to analyze music by the artists who inspire you. This will help you understand how they build their tracks, and develop their ideas for when you start working on how things are arranged and orchestrated.
“I’ve come to love these awful quality files. In most cases, listening to their lossless versions just doesn’t sound right to me. My 128 kbps version of Mario’s ‘Let Me Love You’ still has the intro skit from the music video attached, hearing the song without it is jarring. With each layer of compression you can practically hear the thousands of others who shared and copied the same MP3, like a destructive digital fingerprint…. I’ve got dozens of tracks like these on my computer still. A 58 kbps copy of Kyuss’ ‘Supa Scoopa and Mighty Scoop’ that sounds like it’s being played through a payphone. A bootlegged CD of Hendrix demos transcoded up from somewhere to 128 kbps.”
When it comes to music “now,” it all depends on who and what we’re talking about. The stuff that gets advertised on harshly illuminated screens down on L Train platforms? The bands involved in what that Pitchfork describes as “the most important stories in music?” Spotify Playlists for the gym? The Bang On a Can Allstars? Generally, I mistrust these things, because I don’t see them making any attempts to use music’s great power to snap people out of the general stupor of malaise that seems to be a symptom of living in our times.

In this piece, harmony and melody are very limited. Harmony is non-existent (if considered as the use of at least three different pitches at the same time) and melody is reduced to one single note, with the only possible combinations resulting in unisons and octaves.

Play around with panning the tracks to potentially double the vocals across your left and right. Then slap some EQ on each of the tracks to bring out the frequencies that will give them definition. When in doubt, use a reference track to help you identify how it should sound in the best case scenario.
We followed these tips and we managed to capture eight complete songs, about five unformed ideas, and a couple experimental pieces that we’re probably going to end up using. All in about 8 hours. That’s definitely a personal best.

The whole video involves one camera and two actors, and proves that an inexpensive music video can be a success with a truly well-considered, compelling story.
